During the last two decades, it has become recognisably evident that the extent of historical metalliferous mining activity is far more widespread and intensive than hitherto believed, and that potential mining risks may be present in areas affected by metalliferous mineralisation. In Devon and Cornwall, large areas are potentially affected by the legacy of metalliferous mining, both in terms of ground stability and as regards aspects relating to contaminated land. The resulting consequence of historical metalliferous mining in Devon and Cornwall is now accepted as being a very real problem by the Local, County and Government Authorities, by Industry and by the public sector. The legacy for historical mining activity can affect both planned and existing development, civil construction projects, highways, as well as those aspects relating to the countryside and general public safety. |
